Patrick Matthias is Senior Group Leader at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research in Basel. His research group works on gene regulation, chromatin structure and in particular on Histone Deacetylases (HDACs). These enzymes have a great medical potential and have been identified as relevant targets in a number of diseases.
He is also the President of the Forum for Genetic Research of the Swiss Academy of Natural Sciences. This interdisciplinary organ of the Academy is engaged in fostering a dialogue on genetic research with the politics, the federal administrations and the general public. In the last years, the Forum has been particularly engaged in the discussions on green gene technology and on synthetic biology.
